Distance: 8.6 miles

Starting point: The Amagansett Long Island Railroad train station. You can take the train here from Manhattan. Bikes are allowed as long as you are not traveling during rush hour, or on holidays. If you have a car, you can park in the station parking lot, or along the Route 27. After you exit the station, turn right and head west along Route 27, which will turn into Main St. After biking for about a minute, you will reach Amber Waves Farm

When you are done, hop on your bike and pedal west for just a few minutes to the lovely, low-key village of Amagansett. On the way, you will pass charming houses, such as the ones below.

A marker in front of the house tells you that, in 1780, British soldiers came to Amagansett looking for deserters from the British Army. They fired through the door of the Conklin House, left. To protect themselves, the Conklin children hid in the oven.

One of Amagansett’s cute shops.

Very soon after the shops begin, you will see a crosswalk. Get off your bike and use the crosswalk to walk across Main Street. Directly in front of you will be Amagansett Square.

Amagansett Square

1 Amagansett Square

Amagansett Square is a quaint, beautifully landscaped outdoor shopping area. Families often picnic, or play, on the lawn. Check out the upscale clothing and novelty stores and Jack’s Stir Brew for coffee — in the summer, there is a good chance you will run into Gwyneth Paltrow or Paul McCartney there. In the evening, the porch at Wolfer Kitchen is a nice place to have dinner.

Walk your bike out of Town Square and turn left. Continue walking west on Main Street until you reach the corner, which is Indian Wells Highway. Hop on your bike and turn left onto Indian Wells Highway. Go straight for about a minute until the road ends at Indian Wells Beach.

Indian Wells Beach

This is one of Amagansett’s lovely ocean beaches. To park here, you need an East Hampton Town Permit (Amagansett is part of East Hampton township) but access to the beach is open to everyone.

Many wonderful memories have been made at this beach. Make some of your own!

When you are done at the beach, exit the way you came in and turn right onto Bluff Road. On your right will be a nature preserve. On your left, you will be passing a 6-block long neighborhood known as “The Lanes.” Each lane is just one block long, stretching from Bluff Road to Main Street. The neighborhood is well worth riding through since the houses are lovely. If you do not wish to do so, simply skip the next paragraph and keep going straight for 5 blocks until you reach Atlantic Ave.

Optional detour into The Lanes: Make your first left onto Hedges Lane (the first street you will reach), turn right onto Main Street, and turn right again onto Miankoma Lane. Turn left onto Bluff Road, then left onto Meetinghouse Lane, right onto Main Street and right onto Hand Lane. Turn left onto Bluff Road.

Turn right onto Atlantic Ave. This street ends at Atlantic Beach.

Atlantic Beach

This is another one of Amagansett’s ocean beaches. Here, you can visit the Amagansett Life Saving & Coast Guard Station Museum or get food at the Beach Hut.

When you are done at the beach, exit the way you came and turn right onto Bluff Road. Continue for one block and turn right onto Beach Ave. This road, which is lined with small beach shacks, ends in a T at Marine Blvd. (There is no street sign.) Turn left onto Marine Blvd. In just one-block, you will reach the end of the road and…

Parker and her husband, Matthew Broderick, also own the house directly across the street on Marine Blvd. The actor and her family stayed at the house pictured above during the spring and summer months of the Covid pandemic and Hello magazine shared the instagram post Parker made of herself loading the dishwasher during that time.

Marine Blvd. becomes impassable at Parker’s property. Head back the way you came and turn right onto Bluff Road. You will pass Sandpiper Lane and Treasure Island Drive. When you reach Dune Crest Way, turn right and explore this lovely street. Then, head back to Bluff Road, turn right, and bike for one more block until you reach Mako Lane. Turn right onto Mako Lane and left onto Marine Blvd. Take this for one mile until you reach

Continue on Marine Blvd. until it ends. Head back to way you came to Mako Lane. Turn right onto Mako Lane, left onto Bluff Road, and take Bluff Road to Atlantic Ave. Turn right onto Atlantic Ave. and turn right again onto Old Montauk Highway.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s house

35 Old Montauk Highway

Gwyneth originally bought this house with her ex-husband, Chris Martin. They have remained friendly and he has even rented the house one driveway over at 23 Old Montauk Highway. That house, according to curbed.com belongs to Los Angeles Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak. When she is here in the summer, Gwyneth can frequently be spotted at Jack’s Stir Brew Coffee in Amagansett, Nick and Toni’s restaurant in East Hampton and, of course, her GOOP store in Sag Harbor. To see photos of the house click here.

Make a u turn and, at the corner, turn right on Atlantic Ave. At the next corner you will reach Route 27. This is where our ride ends.

SAFETY TIP: Route 27 is very heavily trafficked in the summer months. To safely return to the village of Amagansett, take the sidewalk on the ocean side of Route 27. If you need to get to the other side of the street, take the crosswalk in front to the Amagansett School, which is just a few blocks west of Atlantic Ave.
